Welcome to our consultation on the new Children's Services Plan 2017-2020

Please click on this short video clip to hear from Maria Walker, Chair of the GIRFEC Strategic Group and Director of Education and Children’s Services.

All services working in Aberdeenshire are committed to Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and to making sure we work together to make Aberdeenshire the best place in Scotland for children and young people to grow up.

We can improve children and young people’s outcomes by focusing on the combined factors that contribute to their wellbeing. The Wellbeing Indicators (Sometimes referred to as SHANARRI) describe the factors that contribute to a child or young person's wellbeing and the outcomes what we want to achieve for all children and young people in Aberdeenshire. The SHANARRI indicators are; Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.

We are looking for views from children and young people, parents and carers, and  practitioners across all services to help develop Aberdeenshire’s new Children’s Services Plan.

The Children's Services Plan is a joint plan that describes how services working with children, young people and their families work together to safeguard, support and promote the wellbeing of children and young people in Aberdeenshire. The plan will set out how we will design and deliver our services to ensure the right support is provided to the right children and young people, at the right time. Prevention and early intervention will be a key focus of the plan, and making sure those families most in need of support, get this in a coordinated and streamlined way which helps improve outcomes.

So what kinds of services are included in a Children's Service Plan?

The Scottish Government defines this as those services provided by the local authority or health board (or which are provided on their behalf, for example by Third Sector organisations.) Some of these are services which all children will use, and others are provided to children and families with specific needs.

There are two main types of services:

Children’s Services:“any service provided wholly or mainly to, or for the benefit of children.”

Related Services: “any service which though not a children’s service is capable of having a significant effect on the wellbeing of children”.
